Point to Point
This route begins at the Long Trail access along Kelley Stand Road and heads north on the Long Trail toward Stratton Mountain. The trail climbs steadily through mixed hardwood and spruce-fir forest before reaching the summit, where a historic fire tower offers wide-ranging views of southern Vermont and the surrounding Green Mountains. From the summit, the route descends on the Stratton Pond Trail, dropping through shaded boreal woods before reaching the shoreline of Stratton Pond. The pond is the largest body of water on the Long Trail and features a shelter, primitive campsites, and reliable water access.
To return, follow Follow Stratton Pond and Catamount Trails back to the road. Along the way, hikers encounter seasonal stream crossings, lush summer wildflowers, and good chances to spot wildlife, including moose in the lowland forest. This classic Vermont hike combines a summit fire tower with a peaceful backcountry pond, making it one of the best day hikes in the Green Mountain National Forest.
