There and Back
This route begins at the Long Trail trailhead on Kelley Stand Road, climbing steadily north through the Green Mountain National Forest toward the summit of Stratton Mountain. The path follows the Long Trail’s southern approach, winding through a mix of hardwood and spruce-fir forest. After a short distance, the trail crosses a seasonal stream (one of several along the lower section) before continuing uphill over increasingly rocky and rooted terrain.
Stay on the Long Trail at all junctions. As you gain elevation, the forest transitions to thicker conifer stands, and the grade becomes more sustained. Near the summit, the Stratton Fire Tower offers panoramic views of the surrounding Green Mountains and is a highlight for many hikers. This peak is also historically significant as the inspiration point for both the Appalachian Trail and Long Trail.
This is a solid choice for day hikes in southern Vermont, especially in fall when foliage is vibrant and wildlife sightings are possible.
