There and Back
This moderate route begins at the Branch Pond Trailhead off Forest Road 10 (Kelley Stand Road) near Arlington, Vermont, and follows the Branch Pond Trail north through dense northern hardwood forest. Early sections feature gentle elevation changes with rooty and rocky stretches typical of the Green Mountain National Forest. After a short distance, the trail passes through a mixed hardwood and spruce-fir zone with intermittent stream crossings and potential for muddy tread, especially in spring or after rain.
Stay on the main trail as it gradually climbs and curves west toward Bourn Pond. About halfway in, you'll pass through low-lying wet areas where footing may be slick or soft. Keep an eye out for moose tracks and bird activity along the way—this section offers good habitat for loons, black bears, and other wildlife. Upon reaching Bourn Pond, hikers will find a quiet, tree-lined shoreline ideal for a rest stop or overnight dispersed camping under USFS regulations.
