Loop
The Beaver Meadows Loop begins at the dam in the Beaver Meadows Recreation Area, located off Forest Road 282 just north of Marienville in Allegheny National Forest. From the trailhead, head east on Beaver Meadows Loop as it curves around the northern and eastern edges of Beaver Meadows Lake. A floating boardwalk crosses the lake’s upper end, offering close-up views of wetlands and waterfowl. After the boardwalk, the trail enters a grassy savannah dotted with pine and spruce. At a marked junction, turn left onto Salmon Creek Loop, which is marked by blue diamonds. After completing that loop, continue north on the Seldom Seen Trail, which crosses Beaver Meadows Road and winds through mixed hardwood forest. This section reconnects with Beaver Meadows Loop, which leads back to the trailhead.
Trail conditions vary throughout the route, with exposed roots, rocks, and occasional muddy stretches—especially after rain. Terrain highlights include fenced blueberry patches near the lake’s headwaters and northern stretches shaded by black cherry and red maple. The trail is open year-round for hiking, but hikers should wear bright fluorescent clothing during hunting season. With its mix of lake, marsh, and forest, the area supports excellent birding and wildlife viewing—beavers are frequently seen along the shoreline.
