There and Back
This short route begins from a small pull-off along FR 258, located between Ludlow and Sheffield in Pennsylvania’s Allegheny National Forest. From the parking area, follow an unmarked but visible footpath into dense forest, heading south on FR 258H toward a narrow ravine carved by a rocky creek. The trail is relatively flat and shaded, with a few muddy sections and occasional gas industry infrastructure visible along the way. As you near the falls, the trail narrows and becomes more rugged, requiring careful footing across logs or rocks to reach the base.
Hector Falls flows down a broad boulder face in two distinct channels, especially after heavy rain or spring snowmelt. During dry periods, the flow may be minimal. The surrounding rock formations and thick forest give the area a remote, almost otherworldly feel. This dog-friendly route is popular among hikers seeking lesser-known day hikes in Allegheny National Forest.
