This route begins at the Hearts Content Recreation Area picnic and parking area, just northeast of the campground in Warren County, PA. Start with the short interpretive route, a wide and gentle trail through a rare stand of 300–400‑year‑old white pine, eastern hemlock, and American beech. Interpretive signs highlight the natural history and ecology of this mature northeastern forest. After completing the route, cross the parking area to pick up Toms Run Trail heading north. This path gradually curves east, then south, through shady groves, mossy logs, and seasonal forest seeps before reaching a junction with Ironwood Trail.
Turn left on Ironwood Trail and continue south through more rolling woodland before meeting Tanbark Trail. Turn right to follow Tanbark north, then complete the route by turning left on Toms Run Trail, which returns to the trailhead. This route combines gentle terrain with extended options, making it ideal for hikers seeking quiet, low-elevation day hikes in Allegheny National Forest. Trails are mellow throughout, with year-round access and winter opportunities for both snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
