The Little Drummer Historical Pathway begins at a small trailhead about 8 miles west of Ridgway, Pennsylvania, off Halton-Spring Creek Road. This easy multi-route system winds through the Owls Nest Ecosystem Management Demonstration Area, offering a choice between a shorter route to Cole Run Pond or a longer route that circles the pond entirely. From the trailhead, stay right at the first junction to begin the main route. At the next junction, staying left circles back toward the trailhead. Hikers who continue right instead will follow the longer route that loops around the entire pond before reconnecting with the main trail. Both options follow generally level terrain through mixed hardwood forest and wetland corridors, with more than two dozen interpretive signs describing the area’s railroad history, wildlife habitat, and the origin of the term “drummer” for the ruffed grouse.
Expect boardwalk crossings over wetlands, streamside walking, and occasional muddy sections—especially after rain or during winter thaw. While this is one of the more approachable day hikes in Allegheny National Forest, trail markings can be faint at times, so watch for white diamond blazes to stay on track. Wildlife sightings are common, and the route delivers peaceful views of Cole Run Pond and the surrounding forest.
