There and Back
The Mill Creek Trail begins at the Brush Hollow Trailhead on PA Route 948, where hikers will find accessible parking and restrooms. From the trailhead, the route quickly crosses Big Mill Creek, then follows the valley upstream through a mix of hardwood forest and gentle terrain. The trail gradually gains elevation with occasional rocky and uneven sections, making it well-suited for moderate day hikes or as part of a longer backpacking route.
Partway along the route, it passes through dense forest with intermittent views of the creek and opportunities to collect creek water, which should be treated before drinking. The trail continues northward to a signed junction with the Twin Lakes Trail near the Twin Lakes Recreation Area, offering direct access to extended backpacking routes through Allegheny National Forest. Wildlife sightings are common, and ticks and mosquitoes can be active in warmer months. The route finishes with a rewarding mix of forested solitude, creekside walking, and backcountry connectivity.
