This easy, hybrid route begins at the Buzzard Swamp 157 Trailhead off Forest Road 157 near Muddy Fork in Allegheny National Forest. Start by hiking the shaded, interpretive Songbird Sojourn Trail, a mellow loop featuring bird-focused signage, wetland crossings, and consistent forest cover. Once back at the trailhead, continue east onto the Buzzard Swamp Trail to extend the route. Follow this gently rolling path along meadows and pond edges known for excellent birding, especially during migration seasons. After a short distance, turn right onto Muddy Fork Trail to loop around the southern end of the wetland complex. This connector leads through low-lying terrain and passes back into mixed forest before returning to the trailhead.
Water sources include small streams, wet sections, and views of man-made ponds, but none are reliable for drinking without treatment. The route is open year-round, with spring and fall offering peak bird activity and hunting season overlap—wear blaze orange in those months. Trails are generally well-signed but can be faint in sections due to overgrowth or snow cover. Dogs are welcome on leash, and mountain bikes are allowed on some portions of the route. Combining two interpretive and wildlife-rich trails, this route is a rewarding option for day hikes in Allegheny National Forest.
