This route begins from the Indian Fort Nature Preserve parking area off Jones Bridge Road, just east of Geneseo, NY. The trail network forms a loop through forested ridgelines, open fields, and glacially carved gullies. Hikers can choose clockwise or counterclockwise travel, following well-marked paths that pass through a mix of hardwood forest and meadow ecosystems. Several short spur trails provide access to high ridgelines with views of exposed shale cliffs and small seasonal waterfalls. Along the route, interpretive signs describe ancient Seneca earthworks dating to the 1400s and the area’s unique geological history, including glacial boulders of granite and gneiss.
The terrain is generally flat to gently rolling, making it suitable for beginner hikers or families. Footing can be muddy in spring or after rain, especially in the gullies. Wildlife is abundant year-round, and the preserve is a popular spot for birding and winter snowshoeing. This quiet, year-round trail rewards visitors with a rich blend of cultural history and natural beauty in the Genesee Valley.
