The Smokey Hollow Trail begins at the Smokey Hollow Trailhead off Park Road in Letchworth State Park. From the trailhead, the route immediately enters dense hardwood forest, where the path winds through shaded groves and passes several small gullies. Intermittent streams may cross the trail, though they are not reliable water sources. The route gains elevation gradually in places, with some uneven terrain that requires careful footing.
As the trail progresses, it bends through thicker stands of forest and skirts areas near the Genesee River gorge, offering opportunities to connect with nearby overlooks, though the route itself does not travel along the rim. Muddy sections are common after rainfall, and the shaded low areas may remain wet well into the summer. In winter, icy spots are frequent, making late spring through fall the most comfortable hiking season. The route returns to the trailhead via Park Road. This trail is best for hikers seeking a moderate forest walk with occasional glimpses toward one of New York’s most dramatic river gorges.
