The Carlton Hill West route begins at a small trailhead near Dale, New York, and travels through a lesser-known portion of the Carlton Hill Multiple Use Area. Starting on a wide path, the trail winds through a mix of second-growth hardwoods and grassy clearings, with occasional views across open meadows. Follow the obvious trail as it crosses gentle hills and dips through shallow drainages. About a short distance from the trailhead, keep left at a Y-intersection to stay on the main loop. The terrain remains relatively easy, though hikers should expect some uneven footing and seasonally muddy sections, especially in spring.
The route is open year-round and typically quiet, with opportunities for wildlife observation along the way. During fall hunting seasons, blaze orange is strongly recommended. While there are no steep climbs or major elevation changes, the combination of forest, field, and solitude makes this a pleasant and versatile day hike in Western New York.
