Loop
The DeWitt Recreation Area Loop begins at the main DeWitt parking area and forms a moderate circuit through rolling forest and open meadow. Hikers typically head clockwise, following a well-defined trail into mixed hardwood and conifer forest. At early junctions, stay right to remain on the primary loop. After a short climb, the route traverses a series of small ridges with partial views of surrounding hills. Midway through, the trail crosses a seasonal creek—water may be present in spring and early summer.
Wildflower meadows and bird activity are common in the open areas, especially in late spring. Expect some uneven footing in rocky or muddy sections, and occasional downed logs requiring minor detours. Trail markings are sparse in places, so carrying a GPS or map is recommended. The route returns to the trailhead via a gentle descent through shaded forest. This is a scenic option for day hikes in western New York’s wooded foothills, especially in early summer or fall.
