Loop
The Oak Orchard Loop begins and ends at the East Shelby Road parking lot, following a relatively flat, well-maintained route through a mix of marshland, wet meadows, and forested groves. Hikers will encounter boardwalks and dirt paths that wind through the Oak Orchard Wildlife Management Area, managed by the New York State DEC. Shortly after leaving the trailhead, the route enters a large wetland complex—ideal for spotting migratory birds, muskrats, and waterfowl. In the spring, expect muddy or flooded conditions in some areas, especially near marshy low points.
The route includes several small stream crossings and shaded segments under mixed hardwoods. Although the trail is open year-round, fall hunting seasons may overlap with popular hiking times—wear high-visibility clothing if visiting then. Dogs are allowed on leash, and while water sources are present throughout, filtration is necessary. This easy walking route is well-suited for families and birdwatchers looking to explore diverse wetland ecosystems on foot.
