The Kanyoo Trail begins near the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, just off Casey Road in Basom, New York. This well-marked, easy-to-follow route winds through a mix of forest, marsh, and meadow ecosystems with minimal elevation gain. From the trailhead, hikers can follow the main path through gentle terrain, using short spur trails to reach multiple wildlife observation decks overlooking marshlands and open water. Raised boardwalks provide dry passage over wetter areas, offering close-up views of the surrounding habitat.
This is a popular option for birdwatching and wildlife photography, especially during spring and fall migrations when waterfowl are abundant. Dogs are allowed on leash, but be prepared for ticks and mosquitoes in warmer months. While open year-round, icy conditions or muddy sections are common in winter and early spring. No water is available at the trailhead, and the nearby wetlands are not safe for drinking. With its accessible terrain and rich biodiversity, this route offers a peaceful walk through one of western New York’s best wildlife observation areas.
