The Swallow Hollow Trail begins from a dedicated parking area on Knowlesville Road, just north of the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge headquarters. This flat, well-maintained route loops through a mix of hardwood forest and seasonal wetlands, with sections of raised boardwalk and compacted gravel providing easy footing. Interpretive signs along the way highlight local ecology and wildlife, making this an ideal choice for both casual hikers and nature enthusiasts.
The trail features several prime spots for birdwatching, with opportunities to see warblers, herons, woodpeckers, and other wetland species. Forest openings and marsh edges often attract deer and amphibians, especially during early morning or late afternoon walks. Open year-round, this route is best explored in spring through fall when wildlife activity is highest and trail conditions are drier. Be prepared for mosquitoes and ticks in warmer months, and watch for slick spots on the boardwalk after rain or snow.
