Trail Overview

This section of the Nicolet State Trail navigates from its intersection with FS 2166 and Nicolet State Trail - Laona and navigates north to its intersection with the UP of Michigan Border. This portion of the trail has two distinct sections: the southern half of the trail, which is located in Forest County, and the Northern half, which is located in Florence County. The southern portion of the trail, located in Forest County, has a base which has a large rock/ gravel. This creates less dust than the surface located in Florence County, but does lead to ruts which can throw a machine around at speed. The trail surface in Florence County is a light, small gravel, which is easy to groom and is fast, but it can become dusty and lead to long sections of washboard if grooming is not frequent. The scenery around this trail is a mix of dense forest, as well as small neighborhoods and small towns, as the trail navigates north through many towns which used to rely on this trail when it was a railroad. Several locations within these towns have posted speed limits to help control dust. This section of the Nicolet State Trail has several bridges on the trail; these are only wide enough for one SxS to pass at a time. One machine will need to pull off before the bridge and allow the other to pass. There are also several areas of the trail that are narrow and will require the same action when machines approach each other. Cell service across the length of this trail varies, but is typically better when in or near a town. This trail is a groomed snowmobile trail in the winter months.
