Trail Overview
FS 2161 runs from its intersection with State Highway 139 to its intersection with FS 2159. This trail is a moderately maintained gravel forest road that varies in width; most of the trail is wide enough for vehicles to pass each other at slow speeds, but some portions of the trail are narrow and will require vehicles to slow down and pull over for safe passage. This trail twists and turns through the rolling and winding landscape of this portion of the Nicolet National Forest. Several of the corners are sharp and can create blind spots of the oncoming trail. Additionally, the dense undergrowth in areas can also obstruct views. The scenery around this trail is mostly dense hardwoods with the occasional pine tree spread throughout. The trail has many subtle inclines and declines thanks to the gentle rolling landscape of this region. This trail can be enjoyed from either direction as well as at several different paces. Fall time in this area can be especially scenic thanks to the variety of trees present in the forest. This trail also serves as one of the access trails to Morgan's Lake Campground, which is located at the southeast end of the trail. Cell service in this area is very limited and can be very slow in peak summer months. Traveling with downloaded maps is recommended.
Difficulty
This trail can be easily navigated by all. The trail is wide enough for two vehicles in most areas, but will require vehicles to slow down in order to safely pass. The gravel surface can develop washboards after extended periods of use without maintenance. In addition, it can also be very dusty after periods without rain. Like any forest road, there is always the possibility of downed trees and other debris being located in the trail after a storm.
