Trail Overview
Cloud Lake Road - FS 2142 is a mild there-and-back two-track trail that can be used to access Cloud Lake, as well as the small dispersed camping area along the northern shoreline of the trail. This dirt two-track has several small mud holes located along its entire length, as well as several rocky sections. These rocky sections are typically short, with rocks no bigger than a softball. Additionally, the rocks are only partially exposed. As the trail reaches the descent to the lake, there are a couple of steep, hairpin corners with some moderate washout. This area is also moderately off-camber, with other small washouts running through the trail. These washouts are typically no more than 6 inches deep and typically have a firm sandy base. Some areas will have softball- to soccer ball-sized rocks partially exposed. The scenery around the trail is mostly mature hardwoods with some pines spread throughout. There is a minimal amount of undergrowth in the forest, but the trail is tight in some areas thanks to small trees that are growing into the trail. There are many rolling hills in this area that allow for excellent views while on the trail. Cell service in this area can be spotty depending on carriers. It is best to see what the service for your carrier is in this area using the specific area, or travel with downloaded maps.
Difficulty
This is a packed dirt trail with a handful of mud holes, small ruts, moderate hill climbs, and several washouts. Mud holes and rut depth are typically under 4" in depth, but depending on the amount of recent rainfall, there could be an isolated 8" plus of depth. This is uncommon but is possible. Mud holes and ruts have a hard bottom. The trail is only wide enough for one vehicle in most areas and will require vehicles to reverse to a clearing in order to safely pass.
