Trail Overview

Vances Cove trail is a meandering gravel road starting at Cold Spring Gap. Descending into the valley along cold spring creek. The road can become washed out in some areas after heavy rain, as the trail so closely follows it. Tight and narrow, the trail winds down to an intersection at Vances Cove, where it becomes a little overgrown but is a good turnaround point. If turning right here, the trail will start to climb out of the valley and into more hardwoods. Many dispersed campsites can be found along this section until ending at a gate. It's recommended to turn around at the last turnout marked waypoint.

Seasonal Closure
Trail is still closed. I spoke to Cathy at the district office on the phone who said this was a seasonal closure, and it should be re-opened by mid July.

The only way this trail could be easier is if they pave it. There’s some very minor erosion in the first mile, and after that there are a very few potholes scattered along the entire length of the trail. Probably just about the best graded and best maintained gravel road I’ve ever seen. Lots of campsites, but nearly all are right on the trail. Overall a very clean area, with the exception of that derelict popup camper trailer in the photo. Bring your bikes because this is an awesome trail for cycling - you could even do it on a road bike.

vances cove/Paddy's cove lane can be accessed off highway 48 and can be hard to see. the trail is well maintained gravel and winds its way through the valley. there are multiple dispersed camping spots along the trail. the end of the trail is gated and has enough to turn around. we could still smell smoke from a recent forest fire in the area that had temporarily shut the trail down. there were very few signs of fire damage along the route.
