Trail Overview

Hornet descends out the back forest of George Washington National Forest to Hawk Campground. Many dispersed campsites can also be found past the Hawk Recreation and Picnic area. The road down is mostly gravel with many washouts of clay and mud exposing ruts and rocks. This is a scenic and secluded area of George Washington National Forest with many hiking, biking, horseback riding, and hunting opportunities. When dry, the road can be traversed in 2WD, but if storms are in the forecast, 4WD is recommended to climb out.

Perhaps this trail, WV347 "Hornet" was worked on after it was originally submitted, because it is not a 2 rating. It is well maintained, graded and gravel throughout. It rates a 1, and any vehicle can easily use this road. There are no obstacles, ruts, rocks, or mudholes. You can camp or picnic at Hawk Campground, or there are a few primitive campsites along the road. At the very western end of the road there is a turnaround loop with a picnic table and firepit. There are a few trails off the main road, but these are for hiking/atv/horse use.

Very well-groomed gravel road that starts at the Hawk Campground entrance and ends in the middle of the forest. Some minor erosion, but you could easily do this trail in a sedan - definitely no high clearance necessary, and you don’t really need 4x4 … maybe if it’s reeeeeeally wet or snowy … maybe. Several dispersed campsites along the route, and the trail ends with a turnaround loop and a picnic table. Look for the Christmas Tree…

Trail was easy, campsite is very nicely tucked away. Fun drive in the snow, better with a wingman but felt it was safe enough.
