Trail Overview

Hawk Run is a meandering forest road that crosses through some private property as it climbs Spring Mountain along the border of Virginia and West Virginia. The road is mostly gravel with some dirt and clay in good condition with a few potholes and washouts. It crests at an elevation of over 2,000ft within George Washington National Forest and passes a section of the Tuscarora Eagle Rock Trail. There are many revealing views of distant mountains along the drive and dispersed campsites right off the road. The private section of the road is the widest while becoming narrower along the forest section road to the southwest. If going to Hawk Campground with a camper, it's recommended to approach from the north from Capon Springs. This road is closed during the months of February, March, and April.

So easy a 2WD could do it, although the eastern end is a bit steep.

This recorded trail is a bit off in that it includes part of Capon Springs Grade/Road. The actual trail WV502 "Hawk" starts at the very northern tip of the recorded trail. Also, this trail is not a 2, it rates a 1. It is well maintained, graded and gravel. There are no obstacles, unless you count a few small potholes. Any vehicle can easily use this road. There really isn't any excitement to be had at all in this whole area. Its best use is loading the kids up in the minivan and having a picnic in the woods. There is one small official side trail to the north, WV502C. It is rougher, but it is very short, and leads basically to no where.

Entrance was blocked at the southernmost point by a gate, probably because of the snow.

Well-maintained, well-graded gravel road. The first part (up to the left turn toward Hawk Campground) is actually a through route for local traffic. There’s some minor erosion, but no high clearance necessary. There was a sedan that passed me by on the trail…. This is a popular spot for horseback riding, and there were several large horse and stick trailers parked on the trail, and some horses, too, so don’t be tempted to go too fast around the corners (because you easily could) or you might run into something very large. Hawk campground is definitely quiet and secluded, with some nice campsites. No water, though, so bring your own if you plan to camp.
