Trail Overview
West Pugh is a 0.6-mile out-and-back route that packs a surprising amount of challenge into a short distance. The trail follows a narrow, overgrown road with a loose gravel surface, significant water damage, and several large ruts. Small creeks and waterfalls can be spotted along the route, adding to the scenery. The road eventually dead-ends at a large fallen tree, beyond which the trail becomes heavily overgrown and impassable. The turnaround at the end is extremely tight and may require multi-point turns for larger vehicles. West Pugh is open year-round to highway-legal vehicles.
Difficulty
West Pugh is a short but technically engaging route best suited for high-clearance 4WD vehicles. Large ruts, water damage, loose gravel, and a narrow trail corridor require careful tire placement throughout the drive. While the route lacks large rock obstacles, the combination of erosion, overgrowth, and limited room to maneuver makes it more challenging than its length would suggest. The tight turnaround at the end can be difficult for longer vehicles. Weather conditions can significantly increase difficulty, particularly where ruts hold water and traction becomes limited. As with most trails in the area, bringing a chainsaw or equipment to clear fallen trees is recommended.
