Trail Overview
Mt. Pugh is a 2.1-mile out-and-back route that follows a single-lane gravel road to the Mount Pugh Trailhead. The road features some water damage, shelf road sections, and a few mildly steep grades, but it remains relatively straightforward overall. Several pullouts are located near the trailhead, providing additional parking and access for hikers. The route ends at a turnaround near the start of the Mount Pugh hiking trail. Pugh Mountain is open from June 1st through October 15th to highway-legal vehicles.
Difficulty
Mt. Pugh is generally an easier route, though drivers should be prepared for some water damage, shelf road sections, and a few steeper grades along the climb. The primary challenges are the narrow road width and occasional rough spots caused by erosion. Most high-clearance vehicles should have little difficulty navigating the route in dry conditions. Weather conditions such as rain can increase difficulty, particularly where water damage has softened the road surface. As with most trails in the area, bringing a chainsaw or equipment to clear fallen trees is recommended.
