Trail Overview
Branching off the 541 road system, W-549 acts as a heavily shaded, dead-end dirt spur pushing into the Washington backcountry. The trail navigates a lush, overgrown evergreen forest, featuring thick underbrush and towering timber that completely canopy the narrow corridor. Holding a level 2 difficulty rating, the track is primarily composed of packed dirt, though it is currently heavily obscured by tall center grasses and creeping trailside vegetation. Along the route, travelers will cross a small bridge over a seasonal creek that holds water during the wetter months. Due to the overgrown nature of the path, the lane is exceptionally narrow, making it difficult for two vehicles to pass one another. The trail ultimately concludes at a forced turnaround point where a massive, uncleared fallen tree completely blocks forward progress.
Difficulty
Rated as a level 2, this narrow dirt spur offers a relatively flat and stable driving surface but requires navigating significant vegetative overgrowth. The roadbed itself lacks severe, deep washouts or large rock obstacles, so undercarriage clearance is generally not a major concern. However, the track is heavily encroached upon by tall grass and aggressive blackberry bushes stretching into the lane. Drivers must anticipate constant, unavoidable brush contact that will likely cause light pinstriping on the sides of their vehicle. Maintaining a slow, cautious pace is crucial due to the limited visibility and the lack of pull-out space if another vehicle is encountered before reaching the dead-end blockage.
