Trail Overview
Located in a heavily timbered section of the National Forest, W-514 is a highly accessible, out-and-back dirt spur utilized primarily by recreational explorers and local wildlife. The road carves a straightforward, single-track path through a deep, shady corridor of densely packed, mature evergreen pines bordered by thick woodland ferns. Because the trail begins at a low elevation of 1,200 feet, this route typically avoids heavy snowpack, making it a reliable option for year-round access. Holding a comfortable level 2 difficulty rating, the well-maintained dirt and crushed rock surface remains in great condition throughout. Although the western edge of the track borders private land, there are a couple of small pull-outs scattered along the lane, as well as a few inviting side offshoots that provide fantastic opportunities for quiet, dispersed camping. Note that the nearby W514k does not connect through to W540, as some older maps might suggest.
Difficulty
Rated as a level 2, this forest spur provides a very smooth, predictable drive with minimal hazards. The graded dirt and gravel roadbed is highly maintained and largely free of deep washouts, massive ruts, or embedded rock steps that might challenge undercarriage clearance. The grade remains relatively mild as the trail cuts through the trees. While the corridor is narrow and bordered by tall ferns and grasses, the heavy brush has been cleared back just enough to prevent significant scratching along the sides of the vehicle, resulting in a relaxing and straightforward transit to the various dispersed camp spots.
