Trail Overview
Sauk Mountain Road is a 7.7-mile out-and-back route that climbs steadily to the Sauk Mountain Trailhead. The road begins as a relatively straightforward gravel route but becomes narrower, steeper, and more heavily impacted by water damage as it gains elevation. Numerous potholes are present throughout the route, with road damage becoming more significant in the upper portions. The road ends at a parking area for the Sauk Mountain Hiking Trail, which features a vault toilet, picnic table, and impressive views of the North Cascades. Sauk Mountain Road is open year-round to highway legal vehicles.
Difficulty
Sauk Mountain Road is an easier trail featuring steep grades, numerous potholes, and increasing water damage near the top of the route. While most vehicles can navigate the lower portions of the road, drivers should expect rougher conditions and narrower road sections as elevation increases. Careful tire placement may be required in some of the more heavily eroded areas. Weather conditions can increase difficulty, particularly where potholes hold water and the road surface becomes slick. As with most trails in the area, bringing a chainsaw or equipment to clear fallen trees is recommended.
