Trail Overview
The Lower Sasse Mountain Trail is an intermediate route with a fun mix of tech and flowy that is not overly difficult. The trail starts from the Sasse Mountain Trailhead, a small parking area at the end of FS Road 1340. It climbs for the 2.2 mile route from south to north, gaining about 1,400 feet elevation as it goes north to connect to the Coral Creek Trail. The trail is a mix of really wide spots, and narrow spots. The beginning is more wide and gradual. Later, it narrows up, and has a mix of loose rock and embedded rock layers, with small root stair steps. Expect a mix of ridge line riding and mild side-hilling, and flat forest hilltop riding. The trail goes through a burn area, where the bushes on the open hillsides have become overgrown, making the trail narrow between the overgrowth. The trail sidehills and switchbacks up through the burn area, on the exposed hillside, and you get scenic views as you gain elevation, eventually ending on a ridge line below Hex Mountain where the trail connects with Coral Creek Trail.
Difficulty
This is an intermediate trail due to frequent moderate obstacle, but nothing overly difficult, and no major ledges. The trail has mild exposure, moderate switchbacks, narrow sections, and frequent loose rock and roots. It is a mix of steep and mild, but also has several really wide sections that are easy.
