Trail Overview

This trail is well maintained, but is a single lane with a few sections of cliff drop-offs that will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. You'll find plenty of pullouts to let other vehicles pass if needed. It leads to Hart's Pass campground and ultimately to Slate Peak. The road is very easy for SUVs and high clearance, and is passable to lower clearance vehicles with care. No trailers are allowed. The road would be slightly more difficult if wet and would be impassable in the snow. No cell service.

Great spots to camp down at the start of the trail, pretty rough road but there was a Tesla and vans at the top. It rained through the night so it was pretty wet but still had great traction in two wheel drive. Rides along some steep cliffs with rocks that were fallen in the road but had been moved by the time we were coming back down. There were a few vehicles on the trail but a lot of them at the top. They had a hiking trail clean up crew towards the top. Great views and a great getaway from the smoke!

A few people on the trail and in the campsites but still very secluded. The main road wasn't too bad and as the other report states, the washboard is definitely the worst part. I recommend driving up to the Slate Peak once you hit the Hart's Pass campground. It's a rougher road (so you will need 4wd) but well worth the view at the top. See the last two pics

Worst part is the washboarding on Lost River Rd getting to the turnoff. AWD minivans parked at Slate Peak parking lot.

The road was mostly clear but we were stopped a little ways past the Trout Creek trailhead - before the Hart’s Pass Campground. A couple in a Cherokee were camped in the middle of the road just before what looked to be a longer and deeper run of snow on the road. You can see it in the photo beyond. Still, we were frustrated with their etiquette to camp IN the road, but I suppose we wouldn’t have tried it.

Towards the top the snow was too deep we couldn’t get through in our side by sides
