Trail Overview
This is an intermediate connector trail between the Middle Fork Teanaway Trail and Boulder De Roux Trail. The spur does about 20 switchbacks throughout the 2-mile route. It switchbacks up the first half, crosses a saddle, then switchbacks back down the second half. The switchbacks on the west half of the trail are more gradual, and there are fewer of them. Continue switchbacking and cross a sloughed-off exposed gravel sidehill, with overgrown bushes that block visibility. On the forested eastern side of the mountain, the switchbacks increase and are tighter and steeper. While most of the switchbacks are smooth dirt, there are a few moderate obstacles, such as large roots and embedded rocks. The trail between the switchbacks is narrow with significant exposure. You'll find a viewpoint just below the saddle on the east side of the mountain, overlooking Esmerelda Peak. This is a multi-use trail used by horseback riders from the De Roux Campground, so be sure to share the trail respectfully.
Difficulty
This is an intermediate trail due to over 20 tight switchbacks throughout the short 2 mile route. They are steep and tight, but are mostly smooth dirt. Expect other technical features such as roots, steep terrain, and overgrown vegetation.
Access Description
A valid Digital Pass, Northwest Forest Pass, or Interagency Recreation Pass is required for each vehicle parked at De Roux trailhead. Washington State Discover Passes are not valid at US Fee Sites. Day use fee is $5 per vehicle per day.
The single-track motorized trails in the Teanaway drainage are extremely challenging, with narrow paths along cliffs, rocky sections, and steep terrain. Because the area is environmentally fragile, riders are asked to travel in groups of five or fewer and use trials tires instead of knobby rear tires. Please ride responsibly and tread lightly.
