Trail Overview

Out-and-back trails are primarily used to access the Appalachian Trail crossing. This is a narrow 2-track that is muddy in places and has numerous short side trails. There are many nice camping spots throughout the length of the trail. Near the start, you'll have limited cell service. The trail continues to an abrupt dead end around a bend where the trail is washed off the side of the mountain.

Good trail with many unmarked forest roads to adventure down. Did not get as far as the downed tree. Unknown if trail still obstructed.

Last 0.8 miles of the trail are obstructed by a fallen tree (just past where road 246 branches off to the north). Included are photos of the trail’s most technical obstacle; which is just before the fallen tree. Beyond the tree is the most deteriorated part of the trail, with a few steep, washed out areas. Trillium were incredible on the tops of the mountains.

I ran this trail in my stock 4R sr5 very easily, mostly in 4lo. Crossover-type vehicles can probably do this as well, without much trouble. The biggest obstacle i found was a diagonally-crosscut washout. I crawled through easily in 4lo, crossovers will hang a tire here, but should be able to make it. The trail is quite easy until it passes the area that has been logged(i think). Beyond there the trail become progressively more deteriorated; erosion is not a huge issue on this trail, because it is on the mountaintop, however some areas are rocky and the tires tracks are a lot lower than the center track of the trail. There are some steep and rutted/rocky sections where vehicles without low-range will have to work harder. There are a good number of places to turn around, and some potential campsites. From the last bend of the trail, a waterfall on the NF Piney River is visible from almost a mile away, looking up the valley(look very closely at photo).

We came in late after light rain, dark with two full sized trucks once you pass the heavy equipment it gets technical with loose wet rocks night didn’t help, if you go to the right it dead ends with a small turn around, I was able to get turned around with a 5 point turn the vehicle that was with us was able to squeeze past and he was able to turn around, not many sights to see if you take the trail ending to the right…. Fun adventure due to big piney being full

Narrow, rocky trail with no water-front camping. Expect some mild pin-striping. Very few camp spots. More of an in and back out trail. All of the good camping is on Big Piney trail.
