Trail Overview
Bob's Spur (FS 880) is a rugged Forest Service road that runs through the Jefferson National Forest. Although classified as a Forest Service road, the trail primarily consists of a rugged double-track featuring ruts, small rocks, mud pits, climbs, and mild unevenness. These terrain features result in a rougher route that provides a distinct experience compared to others in the area. While many vehicles can navigate this trail, high ground clearance is recommended. The route begins with a steady climb up Goat Knob and Johns Spur before transitioning to run along the scenic ridge and peak of Johns Spur. The trail provides a few occasional views of the surrounding forest; however, the majority of the route is heavily wooded. Note that this trail is subject to seasonal closures throughout the year, with open windows including 01/01-01/10, 04/01-05/21, 09/24-12/31.
Difficulty
The trail includes a few sections of mud depending on rainfall, which can range up to roughly 6 inches in depth. Additional ruts, steeper climbs, and uneven sections increase the difficulty compared to surrounding trails. High ground clearance is recommended for portions of the route.
