Trail Overview
The Hidden Lake Overlook trail is a beautifully isolated, little-used 0.7-mile backcountry two-track that treats off-road explorers to a deeply scenic and rugged high-desert transit. Under brilliantly blue skies dotted with fluffy white clouds, the vivid, exceptionally deep red-sand path meanders gently through dense, vibrant green groves of mature juniper trees and thick, rustic desert scrub. As you venture further along this delightfully quiet route, the sandy trail begins a distinct, steep descent, dropping down directly toward the edge of a dramatic sandstone bluff. The terrain aggressively shifts as it plunges into a carved-out gully characterized by severely deep sand and leaning, off-camber slopes surrounded by the heavy brush. The short but intensely technical journey officially concludes right at the rim of the towering sandstone bluff situated directly above the secluded waters of Hidden Lake, providing an incredibly rewarding, breathtaking panoramic vantage point for those properly equipped to reach the terminus.
Difficulty
The Hidden Lake Overlook definitely earns a Level 3 Moderate technical rating, driven entirely by its exceptionally deep, loose red sand and a specific, challenging terrain feature. To safely negotiate this heavily tracked route, drivers absolutely must utilize a high-clearance vehicle equipped with a true four-wheel-drive system. Lowering your tire air pressures before entering the brush is strictly necessary to maintain critical flotation in the soft sand and to successfully power up the steep, intensely off-camber sandy climb required to exit the deep gully without sliding sideways. Standard AWD crossovers lacking sufficient clearance will rapidly lose traction and risk getting severely bogged down or high-centered on the leaning, deeply rutted inclines.
