Trail Overview

BLM 101F is a scenic, 0.9-mile sandy two-track that escorts off-road explorers deep into a quiet high-desert environment. Branching off the main network, this route primarily follows the natural contours of a winding desert gully, surrounded by a dense forest of mature green juniper trees and thick sagebrush. The trail surface consists heavily of deep, shifting red sand interspersed with numerous minor sandstone rock obstacles that add a satisfying layer of technicality to the drive. As you navigate the distinctly tight corridor, drivers of large or full-size vehicles should expect unavoidable brush contact and guaranteed pinstriping along their side panels. Ultimately, this rugged track serves as a vital backcountry connector to BLM 101G, which continues onward to reveal a beautiful, isolated viewpoint overlooking the surrounding terrain. With its vivid sandy tread contrasting against the bright, cloud-dotted sky, BLM 101F provides a highly engaging off-road transit.

Difficulty

BLM 101F confidently earns a Level 3 Moderate technical rating. The primary challenge lies in navigating the exceptionally soft, power-sapping red sand while simultaneously climbing through the undulating wash. To safely traverse this gully without getting bogged down or losing traction on the scattered sandstone rock obstacles, a high-clearance vehicle equipped with a true four-wheel-drive system is necessary. Furthermore, dropping your tire air pressure is strictly required for essential flotation, and utilizing 4Lo gearing is heavily relied upon to successfully pull through the steepest sandy sections of the wash. Standard AWD crossovers lack the necessary clearance and gearing, and will quickly become stranded in these distinctly soft conditions.
