Trail Overview
Marked prominently at its starting point by a distinct brown carsonite forest service post, BLM 101J is an exceptionally fun but highly demanding 2.5-mile backcountry trail. Immersing explorers in a rugged high-desert landscape, the route weaves tightly through thick juniper trees and brush under brilliant blue skies. The journey is notoriously slow-going and intensely technical, as the deeply tracked path repeatedly plunges into and aggressively climbs out of numerous carved gullies. Because of this sustained, low-speed strain on the drivetrain, it is highly recommended that drivers continuously monitor their engine temperatures. As the trail meanders through the distinctly narrow corridor, midsize and larger rigs will inevitably brush against encroaching branches, resulting in guaranteed side-panel pinstriping. Ultimately, this route delivers a highly rewarding, adrenaline-pumping experience for drivers looking to truly test their rig's capabilities on exposed rock and soft sand.

BLM 101J firmly earns a formidable Level 4 Moderate-Advanced technical rating. This is a punishing, highly technical route that features severe sandstone rock obstacles and incredibly steep, loose sandy hill climbs out of deep gullies. To safely negotiate these hazards, a highly capable 4x4 vehicle with excellent ground clearance and aired-down tires is strictly mandatory. Because midsize and larger vehicles will inevitably scrape their armor on the jagged rock ledges, heavy-duty rock sliders and undercarriage skid plates are incredibly helpful for preventing severe mechanical damage. Low-clearance AWD crossovers will fail immediately on this route.
