Trail Overview
BLM 101G is a spectacular 1.3-mile backcountry two-track that treats explorers to some of the most rewarding scenery in the local network. The sandy route closely parallels the dramatic rim of a deep, carved canyon, offering a constant sense of vast scale as you drive. The path gracefully weaves through a classic high-desert landscape, passing between scattered groves of green juniper trees and clusters of low-lying sagebrush under a beautiful, open sky. Along this quiet transit, travelers will discover a couple of excellent dispersed campsites situated right off the main track. One of these campsites is perched directly on the edge of the canyon itself, providing a breathtaking, secluded spot to spend the night with unobstructed views. The trail culminates at a truly magnificent, remote viewpoint that overlooks the junction of two distinct side canyons, making this short sandy drive an absolute must-do detour for landscape photographers and backcountry campers alike.
Difficulty
BLM 101G firmly earns a Level 2 Easy technical rating, primarily dictated by its soft, consistently deep red-sand surface. The route is entirely free of severe rock-crawling ledges, intimidating off-camber washouts, or deep mud bogs. However, navigating the distinctly loose sand requires a driver to maintain deliberate, steady momentum to avoid getting stuck or bogged down in the ruts. A high-clearance 2WD truck, standard AWD crossover, or stock SUV can manage this beautiful track safely under dry conditions. Lowering your tire air pressures before hitting the trail is highly recommended to improve essential flotation and smooth out the bumpy ride.
