Trail Overview
Marked prominently at its beginning by a brown carsonite forest service post indicating the 101 and 101D junction, BLM 101 is a beautiful, deeply secluded 0.7-mile backcountry transit. This exceptionally vibrant, red-sand two-track playfully weaves its way through a dense, highly fragrant high-desert landscape heavily populated by mature green juniper trees and thick, rustic sage bushes. Under expansive, remarkably bright blue skies dotted with dramatic white clouds, the soft, heavily tracked route meanders gracefully over gentle, undulating rises and through beautifully sweeping sandy curves. While the journey is visually stunning and remarkably peaceful, the distinctly narrow, encroaching tree lines create a notably tight corridor that will closely hug your vehicle. It is a quintessential, deeply immersive high-desert off-road experience perfectly suited for explorers looking to escape into the quiet, isolated beauty of the backcountry terrain.
Difficulty
BLM 101 confidently earns a Level 2 Easy technical rating, primarily dictated by its persistently deep and exceptionally soft red-sand surface. The undeniably loose, shifting nature of the sand requires a driver to maintain steady momentum and utilize a high-clearance 4x4 or AWD vehicle to successfully prevent getting helplessly bogged down in the ruts. Furthermore, because the winding trail so tightly weaves between the rigid, encroaching juniper trees and overgrown sage bushes, aggressive cosmetic pinstriping along the side panels is guaranteed for any large or full-size vehicles attempting this narrow transit. Lowering your tire pressures before hitting the sand is highly recommended to improve flotation and overall ride quality.
