Trail Overview
BLM 101N is a highly secluded, 1.2-mile backcountry two-track that escorts off-road explorers to a truly spectacular canyon overlook. This exceptionally tight and twisty route meanders deeply through a dense, fragrant forest of mature green juniper trees under a brilliant blue sky dotted with fluffy clouds. Because the trail sees very little recreational use, the rustic vegetation has become significantly overgrown, creating an immersive but noticeably narrow driving corridor. As the distinctly soft, deep red-sand path playfully winds its way through the brush, it steadily guides drivers toward the canyon edge. The remarkably scenic journey officially concludes at a dramatic, wide-open rocky bluff, deeply rewarding travelers with breathtaking, unobstructed panoramic views of the sprawling valleys, canyons, and rugged plateaus located far below the rim.
Difficulty
BLM 101N comfortably earns a Level 2 Easy technical rating, primarily dictated by its distinctly soft, deeply tracked red-sand surface. While the route fundamentally lacks severe rock-crawling ledges or intimidating off-camber washouts, safely negotiating the loose, shifting sand requires steady momentum and a vehicle equipped with adequate high ground clearance to comfortably clear the ruts. Lowering your tire air pressures before hitting the trail is highly recommended to vastly improve essential flotation and maintain traction. Furthermore, because the trail is noticeably overgrown and rarely maintained, aggressive cosmetic pinstriping along the side panels is a guarantee for any vehicle larger than a short-wheelbase 4x4 attempting the transit.
