Trail Overview
BLM 103A is an incredibly fun, fast-paced 0.8-mile backcountry sand trail that offers a wonderfully open driving experience. Unlike the tighter routes found elsewhere in the surrounding area, this exceptionally wide-open sandy two-track features excellent, unobstructed sight lines that safely allow drivers to carry momentum and maintain a noticeably quicker driving pace. The vivid red-sand trail playfully meanders through a classic high-desert landscape populated by scattered, mature green juniper trees and rustic desert scrub under a brilliant blue sky dotted with white clouds. This highly engaging transit is heavily characterized by a series of smooth, naturally banked S-turns that establish a fantastic, fluid rhythm behind the wheel. Along the drive, explorers will briefly pass a distinct cluster of metal and concrete water troughs situated directly off the trail, adding a touch of rustic history to the open environment. Ultimately, this brief transit perfectly blends beautiful desert vistas with an exhilarating, rolling drive.
Difficulty
BLM 103A comfortably earns a Level 2 Easy technical rating. Because the trail boasts exceptionally wide-open sight lines and completely lacks severe rock-crawling ledges or tight, vehicle-scratching brush, it is generally very straightforward and relaxing to navigate. The sole technical challenge on this fast 0.8-mile route is the remarkably soft, deep red sand that makes up the entire track. Maintaining steady forward momentum through the banked S-turns is essential to avoid bogging down in the shifting surface. A high-clearance 4x4 or AWD vehicle with lowered tire pressures is highly recommended to vastly improve essential flotation, maximize traction, and smooth out the high-speed ride.
