Trail Overview
BLM 103 is a highly enjoyable, fast-paced 1.4-mile backcountry sand trail that offers off-road explorers a wonderfully open driving experience. Unlike the narrower, heavily wooded paths in the surrounding network, this notably wide sandy two-track provides excellent, unobstructed sight lines that allow drivers to confidently carry momentum and maintain a surprisingly quick pace. The vividly colored red-sand route playfully cuts through a classic high-desert landscape, flanked by scattered mature green juniper trees and low-lying desert scrub under a brilliant blue sky dotted with fluffy white clouds. Along the swift journey, the trail crosses over a sturdy metal cattle guard set between rustic wooden fence posts, adding a touch of ranching character to the remote environment. As you cruise along the undulating surface, the distinctly open terrain generously rewards travelers with spectacular, sweeping views of the majestic white stone cliffs looming beautifully in the far distance.
Difficulty
BLM 103 comfortably earns a Level 2 Easy technical rating. Because the trail boasts an exceptionally wide-open layout without severe rock ledges or tight, vehicle-scratching brush, it is generally very straightforward to navigate. The primary challenges on this 1.4-mile route are the remarkably soft, deep red sand and the frequent presence of heavily corrugated, bouncy washboard sections along the track. To safely maintain your forward momentum without bogging down, and to significantly smooth out the bone-rattling vibrations of the washboard surface, lowering your tire air pressures before hitting the trail is highly recommended. A high-clearance 2WD or AWD vehicle can confidently manage this fast-paced transit under dry conditions.
