Trail Overview

Croton Road is a rarely used gravel road that stretches twenty-five miles through the Grand Staircase Escalante. It connects Left Hand Collett to the Sit Down Bench and Little Valley roads along the Croton Bench above Lake Powell. Its biggest draw is those seeking evidence of the underground burning coal fires in the nearby Burning Hills. This road is rocky and is not regularly maintained. In wet weather, it would be easy to get stuck. This is a very remote area.

Took this trial from Escalante to Alstrom Point. Only saw two others on the trail both coming in opposite direction and one was a police vehicle. Alstrom point is totally worth the drive this route is not. Absolutely not a gravel road. It took us probably 6 hours to do the whole thing. Mostly slip rock mixes with gravel and sand. Whole trial is just up and down hills. Very slow moving with some very technical parts towards the end. Thankfully we were going down the technical parts not up. Low range and traction control aids necessary. If you have the time views are great but otherwise any other route along here is a better choice. We would not do again.

Most of the trail not that bad, normal expected truck trail. Last few miles before the intersection with little valley road was challenging. Multiple washouts and rock slides. Some ledges up to 2 feet. My group completed the trail in a lifted 2500, a lifted tundra, a stock raptor and a stock sierra. Multiple good camping sites located near the end of the trail.

Nice trail, ridden with SxS which handled it well. Like others mentioned, there is some rockfall in some areas that would make this challenging for a full sized vehicle.

Steep narrow road at times with 12-15 inch rocks to drive over on some steep grades. Very sharp switchbacks. Long vehicles would have a hard time. Give yourself three to four hours to drive this section of road/trail.

I was passing from hole in the rock road to Big Water. Probably should have taken Collet Canyon. This road was very slow going for a green trail, including one steep section with a dropoff that was a bit off-camber with 8-12" embedded rocks. I would not be comfortable doing this in a van or many stock AWD/4WD vehicles.

there is a section with some boulders that are slightly on the trail and if you're too wide you might not be able to squeeze by. making it harder to turn around.

This could be fun if you had the proper vehicle. 4x4 with high clearance or a bike or something. We were in a stock Jeep Grand Cherokee AWD. We should've turned around but did not. Only enough room for one vehicle. The road had many boulders and rocks on the path and we were scraping the bottom quite a bit.
