Trail Overview

Batty Pass Caves trail leads to caves carved out of the rock by two brothers, Bill and Cliff Lichtenhahn in the 1950s and 1960s. The trail starts on an old double track through a flat desert and then converts to a single track as it enters the hills. The brothers created table tops checkerboards, and other articles out of petrified wood, jasper, and other stone. Of the three caves, two were used as workshops and one as living quarters. Today, the caves contain the remains of old beds, a boat, shelves, and machinery. An old, rusted-out car sits in front. The dirt road condition leading to the caves varies with recent weather but is generally easy.

Trail significantly obstructed where it crosses the wash due to storm water. Did not attempt to cross. High clearance 4x4 could probably navigate through but I didn’t want to risk it traveling alone.
