Trail Overview

This is a backcountry route bordering the Burning Hills Wilderness Study Area. It connects Alstrom Point above Lake Powell to the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. It starts with a steep climb up Kelly Grade. When dry, this road is a straightforward drive with plenty of twists, turns and climbs in and out of washes to keep things interesting. On the northern end, the road connects to BLM 230 and drops into Willard Wash, which has an active stream. This road is up above 5000 feet elevation, so it is impassable in winter and early spring due to snow and muddy conditions.

We travelled NOBO. The first few miles were easy and smooth. About half ways it became a steep descent with a lot of loose rock. Once we got to the cut across through Willard Canyon it became difficult. Rain has washed a lot of the trail away. Large ledges from washouts, off camber ledges, large debris. We had to build up quite a bit to make it through and it took us hours. Locals turned around and said they've never seen it this bad.

Road has been recently maintained through the canyon between hole in the rock road and the junction with BLM 300. Obstructions previously reported were cleared.

Trail is washed out and impassable going east to west about 8 miles in from Hole in the Rock. It’s a straight 6’ cliff up. What’s left is too narrow for most vehicles (our sxs included). Probably doable if running from west to east, but still sketchy. There’s another spot 1/2 earlier with a big rock that will stop most vehicles.

About 8 miles in from Hole in the Rock, Trail was impassable. Recently washed out, deep sticky Mud and large boulders blocking trail. Ran trail with 2009 Power Wagon w/ 35” tires. Watch weather for potential flash flooding of trail. No where to go if you are driving through the wash.

When I went in late January a good bit of the trail was straight up sheets of ice (enough to ice skate on which we did lol) I’m in a Ram 2500 on 35s aired down to 15 pounds so I’m quite heavy, I never broke through so any lighter rigs should be fine as long as it stays frozen
