Trail Overview
Marked prominently at its entrance by a brown carsonite forest service post, BLM 63 is a wonderfully fluid, 2.1-mile sandy two-track that seamlessly escorts explorers through a deeply serene high-desert landscape. The vivid, soft red-sand path playfully winds its way through vast, open meadows of vibrant green sagebrush and dense, fragrant clusters of mature juniper trees under expansive, beautifully overcast skies. This visually stunning route is an absolute joy to navigate, heavily characterized by an abundance of sweeping, naturally banked sandy turns that actively encourage a fun, rolling driving rhythm. As the track gently undulates across the landscape, it offers fantastic, sweeping panoramic vistas of the surrounding rugged plateaus in the distance. Along the way, backcountry travelers will discover a couple of inviting, flat dispersed campsites situated conveniently off the main trail, perfectly positioned for a quiet, isolated overnight retreat nestled safely in the brush.
Difficulty
BLM 63 confidently earns a Level 2 Easy technical rating, primarily dictated by its persistently deep and exceptionally soft red-sand surface. While the trail is entirely devoid of intimidating rock-crawling ledges, severe off-camber washouts, or deep mud bogs, the heavily tracked, banked turns feature pockets of considerably deep sand that will quickly tax a vehicle's traction. Because of these distinctly soft, shifting conditions, a high-clearance vehicle equipped with a true four-wheel-drive (4WD) system is highly recommended to safely negotiate the terrain without losing momentum or risking getting bogged down. Airing down your tires before hitting the trail will drastically improve essential flotation, maintain traction, and provide a much smoother, more controlled ride through the sweeping desert curves.
