Trail Overview
Marked prominently at its entrance by a weathered brown carsonite post, BLM 64J is a brief but highly engaging 0.8-mile backcountry transit route. This exceptionally vibrant, red-sand two-track playfully meanders through a dense, fragrant forest of mature green juniper trees and thick desert scrub under expansive, beautifully cloudy skies. As off-road explorers navigate the remarkably twisty path, they will encounter numerous fun, banked sandy turns that naturally encourage a fluid, rolling driving pace. However, drivers must remain attentive, as the soft sandy tread is persistently textured with a high frequency of bumpy washboards and interspersed with occasional, embedded sandstone rocks that briefly interrupt the otherwise smooth terrain. It is a quintessential, deeply scenic high-desert drive that perfectly showcases the region's rugged beauty while connecting the local spider web of trails.
Difficulty
BLM 64J confidently earns a Level 2 Easy technical rating. The primary challenges on this short route are the persistently soft, deep red sand and the continuous stretches of bumpy washboards that line the twisty track. While the trail is entirely devoid of severe, vehicle-damaging rock ledges or threatening off-camber washouts, the deep sand requires a driver to maintain steady momentum through the banked turns to avoid getting bogged down. Additionally, occasional scattered sandstone rocks punctuate the tread, making a high-clearance 2WD vehicle, standard AWD crossover, or stock SUV the ideal choice for absorbing the bumps and safely clearing the uneven terrain. Airing down tires is highly recommended to vastly improve flotation in the sand and soften the relentless washboard chatter.
