Trail Overview
BLM 61H is an incredibly demanding, highly technical 0.5-mile backcountry route divided into two very short but deeply intense off-road segments. Tucked within a classic high-desert landscape of dense, fragrant juniper trees and vibrant green scrub, the path starts as a deceptively soft, deep red-sand two-track under expansive, cloudy skies. However, this brief transit quickly transforms from a loose sandy wash into an exposed, rugged rock-crawling adventure. As the trail steadily climbs in elevation, it reveals sweeping, breathtaking panoramic views looking out over the vast, tree-dotted valleys below. The absolute highlight—and primary physical barrier—of this route is a steep series of sheer, solid sandstone ledges that naturally form a daunting rock "waterfall" obstacle directly in the path. Because the physical segments are so remarkably brief, the incredibly slow travel time perfectly illustrates the necessary, methodical crawling pace. It is a highly concentrated dose of technical four-wheeling that deeply rewards properly equipped off-roaders with an adrenaline-pumping climb and spectacular regional vantage points.
Difficulty
BLM 61H firmly earns a formidable Level 4 Moderate-Advanced technical rating due to its intense, vehicle-testing rock obstacles. The trail explicitly requires drivers to carefully navigate up numerous jagged rock ledges, culminating in a severe, highly intimidating sandstone waterfall climb. To safely conquer this steep, high-consequence rock face without sustaining devastating undercarriage or body damage, an extremely capable 4x4 vehicle is absolutely mandatory. Drivers must be equipped with high ground clearance, aggressive off-road tires, excellent suspension articulation, and at least a rear locking differential to maintain vital traction on the uneven rock steps. Standard AWD crossovers and low-clearance stock SUVs will immediately fail on this severe route and should not attempt the climb under any circumstances.
