Trail Overview

Marked prominently at its starting point by a brown carsonite forest service post, BLM 61G is a brief but highly rewarding 0.5-mile backcountry two-track. This exceptionally scenic, deep red-sand trail offers a remarkably serene escape as it playfully winds its way through a classic, vibrant high-desert landscape. Explorers will meander past dense, fragrant groves of mature green juniper trees, interwoven with rugged, weathered deadfall and thick desert scrub under expansive, beautifully cloudy skies. While the transit is relatively short, it provides a profoundly peaceful atmosphere, offering a couple of excellent, flat dispersed campsites situated directly along the route that are perfect for a quiet overnight stay. The true highlight of this secluded trail awaits at its terminus: a beautiful, wide-open sandstone bluff overlook. This stunning vantage point rewards drivers with sweeping, unobstructed panoramic views of the rugged surrounding terrain, making the quick, sandy drive an absolute must-do detour for landscape photography or a deeply isolated break in the backcountry.

Difficulty

BLM 61G confidently earns a Level 2 Easy technical rating almost entirely due to its persistently soft and exceptionally deep red-sand surface. While the trail fundamentally lacks extreme, vehicle-damaging rock-crawling ledges, steep hill climbs, or threatening off-camber washouts, the loose, shifting sand will inevitably tax a vehicle's traction. A standard AWD crossover, stock SUV, or high-clearance 2WD truck can manage this short route safely under dry conditions, but lowering your tire pressures is highly recommended to vastly improve flotation, prevent getting bogged down in the winding turns, and maintain essential forward momentum.
