Trail Overview
BLM 64K is an exceptionally demanding and incredibly scenic 0.5-mile backcountry two-track that immediately plunges off-roaders into an intense, highly technical high-desert environment. Nestled among dense, fragrant juniper trees and vibrant desert scrub under dramatic, cloudy skies, the route begins as a deceptively soft, deep red-sand path. However, the journey quickly transforms into a rigorous, slow-paced rock-crawling adventure. The exceptionally slow travel time—taking nearly half an hour to cover just half a mile—is heavily dictated by a series of steep, imposing sandstone ledges that abruptly interrupt the sandy tread and require careful, calculated tire placement. The most significant feature of this short, punishing transit is an absolutely massive 30-foot sandstone rock climb, which serves as the official transition point connecting onto the TC0010 trail. If you choose to bypass the formidable TC0010 climb and continue strictly along the 64K path, the sandy track abruptly dead-ends just past this junction, terminating directly at the impassable, towering base of yet another sandstone cliff face.
Difficulty
BLM 64K firmly earns a Level 4 Moderate-Advanced technical rating due to its unforgiving combination of deep, power-sapping red sand and highly technical rock-crawling obstacles. While the soft sand requires lowered tire pressures for essential flotation, the primary hazards are the severe, vertical sandstone ledges blocking the path—most notably the intimidating 30-foot rock wall marking the TC0010 transition. To safely attempt this incredibly steep, high-consequence climb, a highly capable 4x4 vehicle with extreme ground clearance, aggressive off-road tires, excellent articulation, and locking differentials is absolutely mandatory. Standard AWD crossovers and stock SUVs will immediately lose traction and suffer severe mechanical or body damage if they attempt to scale these imposing rock faces.
