Trail Overview
Rubicon Ridge is a steep and technical trail located behind CAT Mountain within Concan Adventure Trails. The trail follows the ranch fence line as it steadily climbs uphill toward a dead-end turnaround point near the top of the ridge. From start to finish, the route is almost entirely uphill and becomes progressively more difficult as the elevation increases. The terrain starts out rocky and uneven before transitioning into larger boulder sections closer to the summit. The upper portion of the trail becomes much narrower with limited room to maneuver, and the small turnaround area at the top requires careful positioning, especially for longer wheelbase vehicles. Rubicon Ridge offers a more technical climb compared to many other trails in the park and rewards drivers with elevated views of the surrounding Hill Country terrain.
Difficulty
On this trail, you’ll encounter continuous elevation gain, loose rock, large boulders, and multiple off-camber sections throughout the climb. The lower portion of the trail is already rocky and uneven, but conditions become significantly more technical near the top, where larger obstacles and tighter trail width increase the difficulty. Several sections can place vehicles in awkward off-camber positions while climbing over uneven rock surfaces. A high-clearance 4x4 with aggressive off-road tires is strongly recommended due to the steep incline and rocky terrain. Longer wheelbase vehicles may have difficulty maneuvering near the summit turnaround area because of the narrow space available. Overall, Rubicon Ridge is considered a difficult trail best suited for experienced drivers and properly equipped off-road vehicles.
