Trail Overview
Indian Head Road is a dirt and gravel route outside of Study Butte that leads toward the Indian Head Trail inside Big Bend National Park. The road begins outside the park boundary and passes through areas of private property before reaching the National Park segment. Remain on the established roadway at all times and respect surrounding private land boundaries. The driving surface consists primarily of dirt and gravel with light washboarding, minor ruts, and uneven desert sections. Conditions can become rough and more challenging after rainfall, with deeper ruts and softer stretches forming in low areas. The route provides access to the Indian Head hiking trail, a lesser-known off-trail destination featuring petroglyphs and desert scenery. This is a quieter area of the park that sees fewer visitors compared to the main corridor trails.
Difficulty
Indian Head Road is generally manageable in dry conditions but includes uneven terrain, ruts, and natural erosion. After rain, sections can become rougher and require additional clearance and traction.
